SOUTH WINS HOME OPENER
PARKERSBURG — Fans were able to take in a pair of action-packed games here Tuesday evening inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center during the Parkersburg South Holiday Tournament.
Sasha Sukhanov and Anderson Mirambeaux each had big games to help lift Teays Valley Christian past First Love Christian Academy, 64-57, in one semifinal.
In the nightcap, the host Patriots had a crazy 3-pointer from Kerywn Marshall to close out the opening stanza against Capital and then held on for a 76-73 triumph against the Cougars.
“Todd (Burner) and Kerwyn kind of rushed him and when they did the ball popped up and Kerwyn kind of just caught it off his chest and almost flipped it up instead of shooting it and it went in,” said PSHS head coach Mike Fallon, whose 2-0 club got a career-high 34 points from Cole Plants and will take on Ryan Arrowood’s Lions (5-6) in today’s 8 p.m. championship game.
Capital, which is now 1-1 and will play the Knights (1-4) at 6 p.m. in the consolation affair, had its only lead at 2-0 when Jabbar Thompson tallied two of his team-high 19 points from a Nas Harris dime.
The remainder of the opening stanza pretty much belonged to South as Plants had a dozen counters in the period, which included a driving lay-in with about four seconds to go. Capital, which made just 6 of 15 from the charity stripe, immediately flung the ball inbounds and disaster struck as the Cougars were doubled up, 26-13.
“They got it down to two,” coach Fallon said of the Cougars never giving up. “Give our kids credit. They found a way to win and that’s the most important thing, especially early in the year.”
Anthony Pittman had 17 points, six rebounds, a game-high four blocked shots and three steals for the Cougars, who also got a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds from Jay Fannin. The Cougars trailed 42-30 at halftime, but used an 11-2 spurt late in the third to close to within 52-47. The final deuce of the run came via a Cavonte Duncan (10 points) bucket in the paint.
However, Plants converted a three-point play with 28.3 left. Then, Seth Fallon, who had 10 points and joined Marshall with a game-high four steals, had an assist to Shane Snider (14 points) for a lay-in to push the lead back to 10.
Consecutive 3s to open the fourth by Thompson and Pittman, thanks to dimes from KJ Taylor and KJ Figures, put Capital right back where it needed to be. Although Brayden Mooney, who had 12 points, answered back with two treys of his own, the Cougars continued to claw back.
With 3:22 to play, Quincy Smith’s trifecta got Capital to within 69-67, but the Cougars couldn’t take advantage of a PSHS turnover as a Karrington Hill 3-pointer for the lead was off the mark. Plants followed with four straight foul shots, but another trey from Thompson made it 73-70 with 34 seconds left. Two Fallon freebies once again made it a two possession game, but Duncan’s 3 from an Ethan Kent assist closed it 75-73 with 26 ticks remaining.
Although Plants only made one foul shot with 17.5 to go, which set the final score, Capital was unable to get off a good look despite having plenty of time and settled for a long 3, which was off the mark.
Despite going just seven deep, Teays Valley Christian made a 13-2 run in the first quarter stand as FCLA’s only leads came at 3-2 on a Steven Rwahwire 3 and at 5-4 after Jamier Fletcher (11 points, seven boards) scored.
Mason Shifflett tallied the first bucket of his eight point evening to start the spurt, which followed with buckets by Sukhanov, Noah Rittinger, a Luis Herrera three-point play and then consecutive hoops from Sukhanov and Herrera.
Mirambeaux, who finished with 14 points and hit a couple of big 3s to keep the Knights at bay, joined Sukhanov and teammate Steven Verplancken (11 points) with seven rebounds apiece. Sukhanov had 17 points and a game-high five blocks.
Shamar Givance had game-highs of 18 points and six steals for the Knights, who trailed 33-25 at intermission after Aneury Parra (nine points) closed out the first-half scoring with a lay-in.
A 3-ball by Mirambeaux closed out the scoring in the third as the Lions led 44-38. A trey by Isaiah Wilson, who had eight markers, got FLCA within five at 62-57 with 47.9 to go, but the Knights missed their final three 3-pointers.
