SOUTH’S FLETCHER SIGNS WITH W.VA. WESLEYAN
PARKERSBURG — Reece Fletcher, an athlete who has represented Parkersburg South’s colors in various sports, has decided to take his baseball game to next level by signing with West Virginia Wesleyan College.
“I always knew I wanted to play after high school.” and “Wesleyan was always an idea because my dad went there to play basketball”.
For many athletes like Fletcher, the time to decide on what to do next, or where to go, begins at the end of their senior season. It also gives them time to reflect on their accomplishments. It was a competitive season for the Patriots. This year Fletcher, his teammates, and the new coach for PSHS Toad Burner capped their baseball season with a 17-6 record.
“I think hitting-wise it was my best year.” said Fletcher, “I had a lot of fun. We also won the OVAC Championship. We played Wheeling Park and won 7-6.”
After a short breather Fletcher researched a couple of schools and even made a few college visits. At the end of the day, it was Wesleyan that caught his eye and kept his interest.
“The head coach [Randy Tenney] really knows my family,” said Fletcher. “He’s the baseball coach and the athletic director at the school. I also got to talk to the assitant coach Brett Ripley.”
Not only did Fletcher get a chance to meet with the coaches and talk baseball with them, he also had a chance to explore the campus. The university and its sports program made a positive impact on him. Wesleyan is the school where Fletcher can see himself succeeding in both athletics and his studies.
“I plan to study Biology,” said Fletcher.
There’s no doubt in his mind he will be able to balance the coursework of biology with the time demanded from being part of his schools sports team. After all, he did so in high school. The only difference is this time, his main athletic focus will be soley on baseball.
“Throughout high schol I was always a dual sport guy,” said Fletcher. “It was always basketball during the winter and then baseball right after during the spring. It [college] definitely won’t be as intense.”
Fletcher will not be the only Patriot going to Wesleyan. His high school teammate the younger Todd Burner has also signed up to go there.
“It’ll be pretty cool,” said Fletcher. “We had orientation on the 18th of June. I’ll know some people.”
The baseball season won’t start up until next spring, but Fletcher is looking forward to his new life in black and orange as a Bobcat.
“I’m really looking forward to what it [Wesleyan] has to provide for me,” said Fletcher. “I’m looking forward to making memories.”
