South grid team conquers JM Monarchs

SOUTH GRID TEAM CONQUERS JM MONARCHS

MOUNDSVILLE — Deja vu all over again. Six days after a beatdown at Bellaire, things got no better for John Marshall on Friday night at Monarch Stadium. The homestanding and banged-up Monarchs ran into their second straight buzz-saw, this one in the form of Parkersburg South. The Wood County Patriots scored early and often en route to an impressive 35-7 triumph. The outcome left both teams standing at 3-2 at the season’s midpoint. “We show respect to every team we play but we show no fear. We came in here and beat a bigger (physically) team,” South coach Mike Eddy said. “We made the plays offensively, both throwing and on the ground. Defensively, we knew we had to shut down their strong running game and we did. “We did what we wanted to do offensively. We missed three TDs on post patterns. Hats off to our offense and our offensive coaches. They did a great job. We still got some things to clean up. We are making some mistakes you cannot do if you want to beat good teams.” South grabbed control on its first five snaps, scoring two touchdowns on plays covering 54 and 50 yards, respectively. The Patriots never looked back. South’s big-play offensive was complemented by its stifling defense, limiting the Monarchs’ potent ground game to 126 yards. “The big plays right off the bat put us in a hole which puts a lot of pressure on our type of offense,” first-year John Marshall coach Jason Willis said. “We knew we were in for a challenge. They have a lot of weapons. “We must get back to playing more physical like we did in our first three games. We moved the ball early but couldn’t sustain it. We are somewhat banged up right now as we lost several more kids. But we have a lot of football left to play and we can get things back on track.” South drew first blood on the game’s second snap as senior quarterback Brayden Mooney located classmate Brett Hearn for a 54-yard scoring strike. Ben Haught’s PAT made it a 7-0 Patriots lead 56 seconds into the contest. After a short JM punt, South set up shop at its 36. Four plays later, senior standout Nick Yoho raced 50 yards untouched for another Patriots TD. Haught’s boot made it 14-0 with 7:42 showing in the first quarter. The Monarchs temporarily stemmed the tide via an impressive 57-yard, 14-play scoring drive. Junior workhorse Justin Frohnapfel capped the march from a yard at the 11:51 mark of the second quarter. Ethan Gray added the PAT. South responded on the ensuing possession when Mooney speared junior Dylan Day on a 59-yard slant pattern that reached paydirt. Haught again converted for a 21-7 lighting. JM never mounted a serious scoring threat in the second half. In the meantime, South used a 3-yard Yoho scoring run and another Haught PAT to make it 28-7 with 9:28 to play in the third quarter. Yoho capped a brilliant night while also dropping the curtain on the game’s scoring by bouncing in from the four with 8:28 remaining. Haught’s PAT made it a 35-7 final. Yoho picked up 120 yards on 16 tries to go with his three TDs. Mooney, meanwhile, was equally impressive, completing 14 of 22 tosses for 267 yards. “We now have a week off before we play Brooke. We cannot lose focus. We must manage the week off in proper fashion,” Eddy said. “In our two losses (University and Athens) we beat ourselves. This is definitely the best team I have coached at South.” Frohnapfel turned in a workman-like effort for the Monarchs. The rugged 200-pounder collected 101 yards on 23 tries. The hosts completed 8 of 17 passes for 81 yards. JM will look to return to winning ways when it travels to Yorkville on Friday night to face Buckeye Local.
