SOUTH STAYS UNBEATEN

PARKERSBURG — After scoring the game’s only goal in the first half, Parkersburg South tallied five times in the last 40 minutes to post a 6-0 girls soccer win Thursday night over Indian Creek to stay undefeated and advance to Saturday’s OVAC finals versus University. The OVAC semifinal contest at the Erickson All-Sports Facility was played in constant light rain throughout on a sloppy, water-drenched field. But the host Patriots, now 12-0-2, nevertheless found enough traction to put the decision to rest in second half with goals 2 through 5 coming in a span of just 12:35. Charley Taylor got South’s first goal almost eight minutes into the game, blooping the ball into the net from the right wing to lead 1-0 at halftime. South, however, once it got rolling offensively in the second half tacked on goals by Taylor, Jordan Huffman, Jessie Life and Samara Nunn to grab a commanding 5-0 lead with still 19:25 to play. Dominating play, the Patriots had 24 shots on goal to only three for the Redskins. South now plays University for the OVAC championship at noon Saturday in St. Clairsville. The Hawks and Partiots dueled to an scoreless tie back on Aug. 21 in Morgantown. “Considering the field conditions with all the rain these last couple days, it was a really soft and kind of a soggy, sloppy field, but I thought our girls possessed the ball in both halves and played magnificently with good composure,” said South head coach Ron Bucholtz. “We finally broke through in the second half after taking all kinds of shots in the first half, but had only the one go in. You never know under conditions like this what’s going to happen, so if you’re the superior team, you’ve got to put the ball in the net to take care business and put the game to bed. But we obviously controlled the game.” Bucholtz noted too that “the girls keep playing better and better, and showed some good intensity today. It was a dominant performance and kind of expected that it’d be this way. But we know we’ll have to be more intense and even have a better game on Saturday.”
