WARRIORS SHUT DOWN PATRIOTS, 4-0
VINCENT — Warren High enjoyed some morning glory on the pitch.
The Warriors scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 blanking of visiting Parkersburg South in prep boys’ soccer action Saturday morn.
“We played well today, a lot better than the first time we played them,” said WHS junior Ethan Yost, the team leader in goals (7) and assists (8). “We’ve come a long way. It was a good team win.”
The Warriors (5-8-0) dropped a 2-0 decision to the Eric Stump-coached Patriots (7-7-3) at the Erickson All Sports Facility Sept. 6.
Warren had four goal-scorers with Gavin Ott, Preston Rowland-Demster, Josh Yost, and Shane Gardner each putting a ball into the back of the net. Ethan Yost had two assists, while homecoming king Matt Goodman and Rowland-Demster one apiece.
WHS keepers’ Bryar Powell and Dylan Place were credited with a clean sheet.
“I think the whole game, defensively and offensively, we were the better team,” said Warrior boss Ekrem Eksi. “And the results show exactly what happened on the field.
“I played everybody, in the first half, too.”
South goalie Chase Hawkins was credited with five saves. The Patriots never seriously threatened to score. After the match, Stump declined comment.
Warren staked itself to a 1-0 advantage in the third minute of play on Ott’s goal. Ethan Yost got the assist.
Yost also got the assist on the Warriors’ second goal when he fed a pass from the right flank to Rowland-Demster, who put the finishing touch on it to to make it, 2-0.
With 24:01 left in the half, Josh Yost drilled a perimeter shot past Hawkins to stretch the Warrior advantage to 3-0. Rowland-Demster got the assist.
Warren led 3-0 at the 10-minute intermission.
Early in the second half, Warren’s Shane Gardner had a goal waved off due to an offsides. But about five minute later, the sophomore striker got a nice left-side feed from Goodman and scored to make it 4-0.
“I think we’re going to play a lot stronger teams in the tournament,” Eksi said. “We’ll have to play better than we did today.
“But this win was a good mental build-up for us, because this team (South) beat us 2-0 (Sept. 6). I knew we were going to get better, but they didn’t know.”
Warren is scheduled to play at Alexander at 7 p.m. Tuesday, while South travels to Ripley at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
