GAME DAY: SOUTH HITS ROAD EYEING FIVE-GAME WIN STREAK

PARKERSBURG — A two-game losing streak early in the season appears to be well in the rearview mirror for the Parkersburg South football team of head coach Mike Eddy. Nonetheless, the challenge for a fifth straight victory for the No. 7 Patriots (5-2) won’t be an easy one come 7:30 p.m. Friday when the Wood County club heads to Greenbrier East. With just one common opponent, not much can be made of the team’s respective schedules. PSHS defeated Ripley in its season opener, 27-7, while the No. 14 Spartans (4-3) failed to convert a late two-point conversion try versus the Vikings and lost 28-26 last week. Greenbrier East is led by quarterback Kyle King. Jaylon Battaile (23-107) and Colby Piner (9-149) both eclipsed the century mark in rushing for the Spartans against the Vikings. While Marion Lawson also rushed eight times for 51 yards during Greenbrier East’s loss, the Vikings managed to churn out a 5.3 yards per carry average en route to rushing 48 times for 256 stripes. “Piner, that’s their home run hitter,” said Eddy, whose squad still hasn’t been scored upon this season in the first quarter. Parkersburg South celebrated homecoming in a big way this past Friday with a dominating 35-7 triumph versus Morgantown. Despite not falling into any of the potential homecoming traps, there’s plenty of cause for concern this week for Eddy and his coaching staff. “Last week we had the opportunity to have a ton of distractions,” admitted the coach. “Although different, it’s not that different (this week). The kids are out Thursday and Friday. “They are going to have two days this week without any school. There’s still a ton of distractions this week. It changes routine and it’s another challenge on top of having a trip. We are leaving at 12:30 for a 7:30 game. It’s going to be a long day.” Nick Yoho continues to lead the Patriots’ rushing attack and is averaging 7.7 yards per attempt. He has 816 rushing yards and a baker’s dozen scores. Brayden Mooney, who has 314 ground yards and a trio of rushing touchdowns, has completed 82 of 142 attempts for 1,163 yards to go along with eight touchdown passes and three interceptions. Devin Gaines (26-165) is also a potential threat in the run game for PSHS, which has watched Yoho (24-313-3), Dylan Day (21-409-2) and Brandon Penn (16-136-0) haul in the bulk of Mooney’s pass attempts. “For us, they are very similar to John Marshall from the standpoint they are an 84 percent run team,” Eddy added. “We know they are going to be very physical and they are going to test our physical and mental toughness. We’re going to have to be able to answer that call. They are going to try and hit you with some play-action over the top and catch you when you’re asleep. “They will go from a four-man to a five-man front. They will give us different looks and their linebackers do a good job going downhill and being physical. We have to keep them honest at the linebacker position. They are going to force us to be balanced and fortunately for us, that’s something we’ve been able to do this year is involve a lot of different guys in the offense.”
