Parkersburg South’s Amos defends his Ironman crown

PARKERSBURG SOUTH’S AMOS DEFENDS HIS IRONMAN CROWN

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Four-time defending Class AAA state champion Parkersburg South finished as the top public school at the Walsh Ironman and junior 220-pounder Braxton Amos made Patriot history by securing a repeat individual crown. Last year, Amos became just the third Patriot grappler to ever win an Ironman championship, joining 125-pounder Ryan Metz (2001) and 160-pounder Casey Daggett (2000). The top-ranked 220-pounder in the country according to FloWrestling, Amos concluded the two-day event with a 5-0 mark. After registering a 25-10 technical fall versus 14th-ranked Andy Smith of Christiansburg (Va.) n the semifinals, Amos squared off against a familiar foe in Owen Trephan. The senior from Blair Academy in New Jersey met Amos in 2017 in the semifinals of the Ironman where the soon-to-be North Carolina State wrestler fell 1-0. This time around, Amos managed to double up the future Wolfpack wrestler via a 4-2 decision. “Overall, I feel like as a team we did extremely well,” said South head man Shaun Smith, who watched heavyweight Louden Haga go 4-2 and place fourth. “Louden had an amazing tournament. I was so proud of him. He wrestled some really, really good matches. It’s probably the best I’ve seen him wrestle. We were really close with Zane (Hinzman at 160, 4-2). “He was two matches away and with a better draw for Brayden (Roberts at 145) and Gavin (Quiocho at 138) they would’ve been able to place as well. It sucks because if you get a good draw you got a really good shot at placing and if not it’s good luck to you. If you lose early it’s a long road and Mikey Shamblin (at 152) had the kid who won the weight class right off the bat.” Amos said he figured there was a good chance he’d meet Trephan in the finals since they were the top two seeds, but he’s been around long enough to know anything can happen on the mat. “You don’t count on your seed holding after the first whistle is blown,” Amos said. “I’d watched a lot of film of Owen after I figured out it was going to be him and I in the finals. I had it down to if I could score points and kind of just keep doing my stuff I could come out hopefully with the win.” Coach Smith said he felt Amos, “dominated the entire match. He was in control the whole time. Braxton kept pushing the pace on him.” When asked about the match Amos admitted, “it’s better than the 1-0 I beat him last year. I would’ve like to have scored more points, but you know. I got a takedown late in the first period and then he got a real quick escape to end the first. He got another escape later in the match and I think I got an escape and a stall point sometime throughout the match. “It didn’t feel like the week of Ironman. We had that match Tuesday and Wednesday night I was sitting on the couch and it hit me, we leave for Ironman tomorrow. I just went up there to score points. I score points, everything else will take care of itself. It’s a lot more fun that way.” Of course, finishing as the top public school was an added bonus. “I’m super proud of the guys. They fought hard,” Amos added. “They didn’t back down from anyone whether they were ranked or not ranked or from a big named school or some hillbilly school like us. “Us ending up being the top public school is pretty nice, knowing that they are paying a pretty penny to go to that school and we are getting a free education.” The only other local placer at the Ironman was Parkersburg High School 152-pounder John Martin Best, who went 5-2 and finished seventh.
