OLENTANGY CLUTCH LATE IN WIN OVER PATRIOTS
PARKERSBURG — Olentangy High School guard Sean Marks proved to be every bit as good as advertised in Saturday night’s finale to the second annual Parkersburg South Holiday Classic at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
The senior guard poured in a game high 30 points to lead the Braves to a 68-57 win over the Parkersburg South Patriots.
Marks connected on four 3-pointers in the game including three in the opening quarter that gave the Braves a lead they would never relinquish.
“He’s (Marks) pretty good and we let him get going early which is one of things we talked about this morning,” said Parkersburg South head coach Mike Fallon. “Once he hit that first one his eyes kind of lit up and he just kept going and going.”
That very first one was a special one for Marks as it was point number 1,000 in his high school career.
Marks, who happens to be the grandson of former Parkersburg legend Mike Hayden, was honored as play was stopped briefly after reaching the mark.
The Braves stretched their early lead to eight when Marks hit his third triple of the quarter and led the Patriots 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.
South made a quick run to open the second period as they got a triple by Brayden Mooney and a dunk after a steal by Malaki Sylvia to cut the lead to three but as would seem to be the case throughout the game, the Braves would manage to pull back ahead.
“It seemed like everytime we would get a little run to get it down to a few they would hit a big shot,” said Fallon, whose team managed to trim the lead to four at the intermission.
“You have to give credit to them for that.”
Olentangy threatened to break things wide open to begin the second half as they used a 13-2 run to open up a 14-point lead keyed by 3’s by Marks and Noah Gossett.
The Patriots used the long range shot to crawl right back into the game as Cameron Marks and Alex Woolard connected to help trim the lead back to six at 42-36.
Once again Olentangy managed to put some distance between themselves and the Pats as they took a 10-point lead early in the final quarter on a trey by Luke Riedel but South had one last run in them and actually made it a one-possession game on a three-point play by Sylvia with four minutes to play in the game.
That would be as close as they could get as the Braves made all 14 of their fourth-quarter free-throw attempts to pull away down the stretch for the victory.
Marks also finished the game with seven rebounds and five assists while Riedel reached double figures with 14.
“It was great for Sean to get his 1,000 point tonight in front of his family… that was kind of cool,” said Braves head coach John Feasel, whose team improved to 3-2 with the win. “Were accustomed to seeing him play like that in Columbus and he’s a great player.”
Woolard led four South players in double figures with 14 while Mooney, Seth Fallon and Sylvia finished the night with 12, 11 and 10 points respectively
South slips to 0-2 on the young season and Coach Fallon feels they have plenty to work on in practice this week as they continue a torrid early schedule to open the season.
“Playing team’s like these kind of lets us know where we are at and there is not a lot of easy ones on the schedule,” said Fallon. “We are entering a very tough phase over Christmas and we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
South will travel to Brooke on Tuesday night.
