PATRIOT MATMEN READY FOR SOUTH CLASSIC SATURDAY
PARKERSBURG — The second annual Parkersburg South Classic will be a little larger than the inaugural one from a year ago.
The defending four-time Class AAA state champion Patriots of head coach Shaun Smith came up just a little short last winter in what was then a six-team tournament. La Salle ended up as the tournament victor after knocking off PSHS, 37-29.
This year’s version, which gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center with doors opening at 7 a.m., features 10 teams broken into two pools. Joining the Patriots in Pool A will be Riverside, Science Hill (Tenn.) and Buckeye State programs Indian Valley and Hamilton Ross.
Mountain State programs Spring Mills and Woodrow Wilson along with a reserves squad as well as Ohio schools Barberton and Mason will comprise Pool B.
The Patriots are coming off a strong showing at last weekend’s Powerade, which saw top-ranked 220-pounder Braxton Amos win his weight class. Amos enters the weekend with a 24-0 record and 17 pins and is still unbeaten in his Patriot career (72-0).
Parkersburg South heavyweight Louden Haga, who is 20-4 with 14 pins this winter, finished runner-up at the Powerade. Coach Smith’s squad also received a third-place finish from 145-pounder Brayden Roberts as well as an eighth-place showing from 138-pounder Gavin Quiocho (18-6, 12 pins).
In the latest individual national rankings by FloWrestling, the junior Roberts moved up to No. 15. He’s recorded 13 mat slappers this year and sports a 20-4 record. With each team guaranteed five matches, Roberts has a chance to reach career win No. 100 on Saturday, but will need five victories.
That might not be easy considering he could run into Mason 145-pound senior Chris Donathan, who is ranked sixth by FloWrestling.
As expected, the Patriots should have a full varsity team on hand. Also likely to dot the Patriot lineup are 106-pounder Samantha Miller (16-6, five pins), 113-pounder Devin Easton (13-5, six pins), 120-pounder Brayden Johnson (13-7, four pins), 126-pounder Tucker Windland (12-5, six pins), 132-pounder Jude Childers (16-8, four pins), 152-pounder Mikey Shamblin (9-7, five pins), 160-pounder Zane Hinzman (19-5, seven pins), 170-pounder Wyatt Linder (12-6, five pins), 182-pounder Dalton Fullerton (11-10, six pins) and 195-pounder Noah Buckalew (16-6, nine pins).
Admission for the entire tournament is $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.
