NO. 1 VS. NO. 2
PARKERSBURG — Top-ranked Parkersburg South will have its senior night today inside Rod Oldham Athletic Center when rival and No. 2 Parkersburg crosses the river for the annual city dual and Wood County bragging rights.
While it indeed will be a special evening for head coach Shaun Smith’s seven 12th-graders — Tucker Windland, Mikey Shamblin, Zane Hinzman, Wyatt Linder, Elijah Buckalew, Dalton Fullerton and Louden Haga — the Patriots are also coming to the aid of their archenemy to help Big Red freshman 220-pounder Jeffery Jones’ family.
“It’s the right thing to do,” coach Smith said of the Patriots donating their proceeds from the 50-50 to Jones’ parents. “It’s just crazy and I hope whatever is going on they are able to do something to help him out.”
Jones, who last competed for the red and white in a quad at Ripley on Jan. 5 where his pin sealed a 38-33 triumph versus University, tweaked an ankle and wasn’t expected to be out long.
“He got X-rays on his ankle and they thought it was a light sprain and it should be fine, but he had a lot of pain in the ankle and couldn’t sleep,” explained PHS head coach Matt Littleton. “The Thursday before Winner’s Choice (Jan. 11-12) he was admitted to the ER. They find out he has pneumonia and MRSA. He didn’t have any open lesions and no signs of an infection in his body.
“He had surgery a week ago Sunday and another surgery today (Tuesday). They also drained fluid out of each lung. I personally have never seen MRSA in a young guy like that to that extent. I witnessed it a few times in college, but a quick drain and they were back within a week and not in the hospital. He’s still in ICU at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (in Columbus, Ohio).”
Two-time Ironman champion Braxton Amos would’ve been Jones’ opponent, but the 38-0 junior Patriot is expected to receive the only forfeit win once varsity action gets underway around 7 p.m.
The only match currently pairing the top two ranked grapplers in the Mountain State comes at 120 with Patriot No. 1 Brayden Johnson taking on PHS No. 2 Garret Donahue.
Mat fans will get to watch the first battle of the season between top-ranked Parkersburg South 138-pounder Gavin Quiocho and third-ranked Big Red Bo Moler, who lost a narrow 4-3 state finals match to the Patriot last winter at 132.
PHS’ Jalen King, who is ranked seventh at 182, has reached his alpha weight and should go at 170 tonight, which will put him in a battle versus seventh-ranked Patriot Wyatt Linder. At 195, No. 2 CJ Wade of the Big Reds faces No. 9 Noah Buckalew while at 160 the senior and expected state champ Hinzman will take on PHS’ eighth-ranked Chace Mathess.
“For the most part, we’ve been wrestling what we have had all season so it doesn’t make too much sense to change things up,” Smith replied when asked if he was considering any lineup changes for the dual. “As things are now, we are probably going to keep them that way.”
One of the other marquee showdowns this evening will pit a pair of former state champions going head-to-head on the varsity level for the first time in 152-pounders John Martin Best of PHS and Parkersburg South’s Mikey Shamblin. Best is ranked first in the class while Shamblin is fifth.
“I was getting out of an escape,” Best explained of the only time he wrestled Shamblin in middle school. “I went to get a bearhug and pin him and I was losing 5-3. I don’t know what happened. They heard a snap and his ankle was out. We are doing a lot better than we did last year.
“We’ve had good matches. We’ve won close duals and we’ve had excellent growth in the room with me and Chace and the juniors pushing the pace in the room and Jalen and Hunter (Ackerman) setting the examples as seniors. Our freshmen are getting better. It’s just been big.”
Of course, it would be a huge upset if PHS were to upend the Patriots, who last fell to their rival during the city dual in 2008 when coach Littleton was competing for the red and white.
“I told our guys everything that’s happened as of now is behind us,” Littleton added. “We focus on trying to get better everyday and this is one of those opportunities. They’ve got a target on their back.
“You can put yourself in a position to get a win and come regional time anything can happen in matches. That’s why we wrestle them. I keep preaching to the guys they have an opportunity to achieve something here.”
