PATRIOTS TAKE ‘THE DUAL’

PARKERSBURG — Louden Haga, Tucker Windland and Dalton Fullerton each recorded pins on senior night in their final home match here Wednesday evening inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center as Parkersburg South continued its domination in the annual city dual by besting rival Parkersburg, 47-15. “It’s awesome. I love being the first match because I don’t have to wait forever to wrestle and then I can just enjoy the match,” admitted Haga, who gave PSHS the lead for good when he pinned Big Red heavyweight Matt McClanahan in 51 seconds. “It was just good to get the ball rolling. It was a good feeling to get everything started and everyone pumped up.” Windland won his 126-pound match via fall against Levi Westfall in 2:25 and the 182-pound Fullerton finished off Jacob McCune in 2:54. The only other mat slappers also came from Parkersburg South. At 113, Patriot Devin Easton got Kage Mathess in 50 seconds and at 145 Brayden Roberts needed 57 ticks to pin Big Red Aaron Corne. “This is the group I started with as a head coach and it is emotional,” said South head man Shaun Smith, who was announced as the 2018 Mountain State NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) mat coach of the year, which will be presented to him at the state tournament. “This type of match it’s hard not to let my emotions go. “I love this and I like beating them. I would be lying if I said I didn’t, but the whole night it went pretty well for the most part. Overall, the kids wrestled extremely well and I’m proud of them. I just hope they keep building.” Braxton Amos finished off the match with a win by forfeit at 220 as Big Red Jeffery Jones was unavailable due to being in the hospital. John Roberts was the winner of the 50-50 drawing and he donated his portion back to the Jones family, which meant they will receive all the funds collected ($1,112). “First off, I think I’ve thanked Shaun and Parkersburg South probably three or for times already today,” said Big Red head coach Matt Littleton, who watched freshman 106-pounder George Cantwell lose a tough 9-8 decision to Samantha Miller after she got a point for a technical violation and an escape in the final 10 seconds. “They donated that money back to us to help the Jones family. “The community came together and really helped them. It’s awesome. We walked away from this dual learning a few things from some of our guys, some good, some bad. Hopefully, that’s going to help build his (Cantwell’s) confidence. We’re just going to keep moving forward and try to get better.” Parkersburg’s first triumph of the evening came when No. 2 Garret Donahue got a takedown 17 seconds into overtime for a 2-0 decision versus No. 1 Brayden Johnson in the 120-pound showdown. Aside from Haga, Windland and Fullerton, the Patriots also honored seniors Zane Hinzman, Mikey Shamblin, Wyatt Linder and Elijah Buckalew. Hinzman controlled his 160-pound match versus Chace Mathess and secured a 22-7 technical fall, but Linder was doubled up at 170 by Jalen King, 6-3, while Shamblin had a tough match versus John Martin Best. Best, who is top-ranked at 152, fell behind 1-0 after allowing an escape in the second period, but he took the lead for good 33 seconds later with a takedown. Fifth-ranked Shamblin was down 4-2 in the third after an escape, but following some blood time, Best got another takedown before allowing a late escape to secure a 6-3 victory. The most exciting match for Patriot fans turned out to be the 138-pound showdown between No. 1 Gavin Quiocho and No. 3 Big Red Bo Moler, who battled back from a 7-1 deficit to take a 10-8 lead, only to fall 12-11 when Quiocho got the winning takedown with 47 seconds left in the match. Parkersburg, which will act as the host for Saturday’s Mountain State Athletic Conference tournament, also registered victories at 132 thanks to Hunter Ackerman’s 3-0 decision versus Jude Childers and at 195 where CJ Wade topped Noah Buckalew, 7-2. Coach Smith’s squad will return to action next Wednesday when they join St. Albans in a tri at Ripley.
