PARKERSBURG — A five-inning, one-hit performance from Grant Hussey led the way for the Parkersburg South Patriots, as they claimed an 8-2 win over the John Marshall Monarchs on Thursday. The crowd at Hank Greenberg Field saw a display in pitching that put the game out of reach in the early going. It took Hussey an inning to find his groove, as he did let up a run on the only base hit he surrendered in the contest. With Reid Wiley at second base, Chas McCool ripped a two-run double into left to send him home. That came after a nine-pitch duel with McCool, as the first inning was his most turbulent of the evening. Hussey quickly gained run support in the form of a productive Patriot bottom of the first. After Shane Dobbs balked in a run with the bases full of Patriots, Colin Bryant knocked in a two-run single to make it a 3-1 South lead. Hussey took advantage of a Monarch team that saw their bats go missing over the next two frames. He got Sloan Williams and Josh Schramm to ground out in a combined six pitches. He struck out the side as he froze John Davis with a pitch down the middle of the plate. Following three more strikeouts in the third, Hussey was on cruise control. He needed more runs to pour in, and he got his wish in the fifth. The two previous innings resulted in one run apiece for South, and they made the most of their chance to put the game away in that all-important next inning. All nine South batters had a plate appearance in what should have been a quick inning for the Monarchs. Hussey and Thomas Nutter were quickly dispatched of by reliever Derek Black, who came in to get out of a fourth-inning jam caused by Dobbs. However, two throwing errors in the infield extended the Patriot half. Evan McMillion reach on an error, as he legged it out to first. In the same sequence, Bryant came from third to score. Oddly enough, Bryant himself reached on an earlier error from Monarch second baseman, Joel Wise. A pair of RBI singles from Blake McMullen and Drew Cochran capped off a three-run fifth. That ended up being all the Patriots needed, as they held John Marshall in check for the remainder of the game. The win sets South (4-4) on a three-game winning streak, and South head coach Todd Burner in excited to see his team’s full potential on display. He just wants to have consistency in his lineup in order for that to happen. “(Our ceiling) is still undetermined,” Burner said. “We’re still looking for a lineup, and we had a bunch of kids out of position this evening. Our starting catcher (Nick Yoho) wasn’t here, and a lot of kids had to move around tonight. He’ll be back tomorrow though.” Speaking of that game, Burner’s Pats travel to Morgantown to take on the Mohigans at 5:30 p.m.
