PATRIOTS TOP RIVAL BIG REDS
PARKERSBURG — Freshman Nic Menarchek scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and Colin Bryant fired a three-hit complete game as visiting Parkersburg South topped rival Parkersburg, 4-1, Friday evening at Bennett Stump Field.
Locked in a pitcher’s duel with Big Red Max Anderson through six frames with the score even at one apiece, Bryant finally got the run support he needed with a three spot in the seventh.
Patriot designated hitter Dustin Corley got the frame started by getting plunked and was replaced by Menarchek. Bryant, who finished 2 for 3 while allowing two walks, no earned runs and nine punchouts, followed with a bloop single in no-man’s land in shallow left behind PHS third baseman Jordan Batten.
The bases were loaded after No. 8 hitter Nathan Currey bunted the ball and reached via a fielder’s choice when Anderson tripped trying to scoop the ball and get the force at third. Although Anderson, who walked two and recorded seven strikeouts, retired Sam Schuler via the whiff, Menarchek scored on a wild pitch with Nick Yoho batting.
Yoho was retired on a popup, but Blake McMullen delivered a two-run single to center for the insurance tallies.
Bryant fanned the side in the last of the seventh, but did allow a two-out walk to Big Red leadoff hitter Hayden Morris. He finished his gem by striking out Nathan Lindenmuth.
“He was on his last batter,” replied PSHS skipper Todd Burner when asked about Bryant’s pitch count. “He was allowed to finish that last batter and that was good for him to get through that.
“It was a good effort out of both those kids pitching. The Anderson kid is a good pitcher himself.”
Parkersburg South, which improved to 7-6 and returns to action at 1 p.m. today at Huntington, got its first run in the top of the third. Grant Hussey’s two-out opposite-field double to left was the spark. After Drew Cochran reached on an error to put runners on the corners, coach Burner put a play on.
“That was the plan, for him (Cochran) to get in a rundown,” said Burner, who watched the Big Reds go after Cochran as Hussey scored on what turned about to be a double steal out of a pickle.
“If they didn’t go after him (Cochran) it was a straight steal. We work on that in practice and it actually came through. We told our kids one of these days it will.”
After the error and the run, Anderson walked Jared Clemente to open the fourth, but Nolan Brace threw him out trying to steal. The Big Red righty then retired seven straight before Cochran reached on an infield error with two outs in the sixth.
“Both kids pitched well,” said Big Red head coach Alan Burns, whose squad will take a 7-6 mark into today’s noon game at Woodrow Wilson. “We made a couple mistakes there that put runners on and they took advantage. It was a well pitched game. We just learn from that and move on.”
PHS tied the game in the fourth. Anderson was hit by a pitch with one out and courtesy runner Anthony Craig entered. The bases were loaded after Brace singled and Austin Curtis drew a free pass. Craig crossed when Connor Walker reached on an error.
The Big Reds had a prime chance to take the lead in the fifth when Morris had a one-out single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, but he was left stranded.
