CHARLIE TAYLOR COMMITS TO LA ROCHE

PARKERSBURG — Surrounded by her Parkersburg South Patriots teammates and family members inside Parkersburg South high school, senior forward Charlie Taylor announced the continuation of her soccer career at the collegiate level. She signed on the dotted line for the La Roche University Redhawks Monday afternoon. Taylor brings plenty of offensive firepower with her to McCandless Township, Penn. She scored 24 goals, six assists and was named a Class AAA all-state first team forward during her final year at South last fall. As a team the Patriots finished the season 18-2-2 and were the top-ranked team in triple-A for the majority of the season, before losing 2-0 to eventual state champions Hurricane in the Region IV final. “It was definitely my best season that I’ve done individually, but it wasn’t all me. “The team was really good this year, we all clicked, we got really close and I think that helped on the field,” Taylor said. “It was definitely the best season I had in high school, but I think we could have definitely gone further, we just got unlucky I guess.” Taylor first heard about La Roche when she saw its booth while attending a college fair at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the fall. Taylor got in contact with Redhawks coach Miguel Lozano and the two quickly formed a relationship. “I contacted Lozano and he got back to me right away. He just texted me on the daily, like it was personal,” Taylor said. “You could tell he cared about his players. He constantly texted me and made sure to invite me to all the events.” Lozano is no stranger to La Roche, as he is going into his 20th year in charge of the women’s program this fall. His length stay anoints him the longest-tenured women’s coach in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. During Lozano’s tenure, the Redhawks qualified for AMCC postseason play 17 times in his 19 years. Taking her first visit to La Roche during the winter, Taylor was taken aback once she made saw the campus in person. Taylor could go to a school that has the majority of the buildings near each other, but can still go out and enjoy the big city. One of the main selling points of the school for Taylor. “When I visited the campus, it was all close together, it nice, small and safe in a big town. So there is plenty to do and I like that,” Taylor said. “They have a really good biology program and I meet with the soccer team, we just clicked and it just felt right.” A second visit in February consisted of an overnight team trip with the soccer team and she was sold shortly after the experience. Taylor plans to major in biology and could see herself continuing her bio education going to medical school afterwards. But Taylor isn’t dead set on bio-med, saying that a lot could change in four years. “I want to thank my high school coach Ron Bucholtz who was unable to make it to the signing, but he really helped me evolve as a player and a person,” Taylor said. “And to my parents for supporting me throughout the years.”
