CLASS AAA REGION?IV, SECTION 1 SOFTBALL: STAYIN’ ALIVE
PARKERSBURG — Facing elimination after losing 10-6 in extra innings in the first game to the Parkersburg South Patriots, the Ripley Vikings needed a big hit in order to continue their season.
The Vikings got that hit with a two-run blast from Grace Walsh in the top of the second. It was enough to give Ripley the 6-1 win over the Parkersburg Big Reds in the second game of the Class AAA Region IV, Section 1 tournament Monday evening at Worthington Field. Hitting seventh in the batting order and battling through hand injuries going into the postseason, Walsh picked up five total base hits in both games and even hit a home run in the game against Parkersburg South.
“Grace has been coming. She’s been battling a hand injury so that’s why she hasn’t been catching a lot for us,” Viking coach Ken Swisher said. “She is hitting the ball well. She can do a lot of things. It’s nice to get that production from her batting spot.”
Jaelyn Hunt went 4 for 5 and was a home run away from the cycle, finishing with two doubles, a triple and two runs-batted-in.
Hitting a total of 11 team hits, the Big Reds only put one run on the scoreboard, as Sydney Bohn hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the third. The Big Reds also left 11 runners on base, frustrating PHS coach Jason Roberts.
“It was awful. We are a good hitting team. We’ve had a couple of games like that where we just don’t come out firing,” Roberts said. “Weren’t ready to go. It’s on us. We didn’t have them ready to go. We will come back tomorrow and try it again.”
It was all offense in the first game between the Vikings and the Patriots, as South was able to force it to extra innings, scoring two runs in the sixth before scoring four runs in the top of the eighth. The Patriots rode on the bats of Paige Adams and Gigi Gerichten as the duo combined for five runs put on the board and combined for three out of the four Patriot runs scored in the extra innings. Adams gave South the early 1-0 lead in with an RBI double in the top of the first and went 2 for 3 in the batters’ box.
Down 3-1 going into the top of the fifth, Gerichten made it a 4-3 South lead, sending a line drive to left field that barely made it over the fence.
