PARKERSBURG - For the second consecutive match, the Parkersburg South Patriots were within striking distance of victory, only for the opposing team to snatch the win away at the last moment.
This time it was the Warren Warriors playing spoiler, winning 164-166 at South Hills Golf Club on a rainy Monday afternoon. Always a good stopping ground for Warren and head coach Nathan Evans at South Hills, Evans believes that with a close victory over a good team on a tough course.
Warren will continue to build off the win to help with momentum during the season. As Seth Dennis and Caleb Davis are trying to get up to speed after spending the majority of the summer playing American Legion Baseball, reaching the Great Lakes Regional.
"We always enjoyed coming over here, because we always seem to have really good matches. I think it's a tough course. So it gives us a chance to come over and play on some small greens and against a really good team. We've been kind of trending in the right direction playing a little bit better for the past week and a half. I'm proud of the guys for just sticking with it and coming in with pretty good scores today," Evans said. "We're just getting back into the groove with some of our guys back. We had a couple of guys playing Legion baseball, we're trying to try to find our groove and it feels good to get a win."
Chance Weihl was Warren's top shooter with a 39. Dennis chipped in with a 40 and a second-place showing.
Jacob Smeeks was the third-best Warrior with a score of 42 and Davis was close behind Smeeks at 43.
Aidan Woodruff shot a total 49 and Nathan Heft rounded out the scoring at 51.
"I thought our top four guys played well today. Chance had a good round. Seth had a real good round. He had a couple of bad holes. He felt like he didn't hit the ball particularly well, but I'm proud of that score," Evans said. "Caleb and Jacob struck the ball well. Nathan Heft didn't start off great but held it together and Aiden came in there at the end as well."
South's Zach Redmon won his second straight medalist honor, finishing with a score of 37.
Placing as top scorer Wednesday at the Parkersburg Country Club, Redmon continued to use what worked at the country club and had another good showing because of it.
"I played pretty well. I didn't really hit my driver as well as I wanted to, but I got a lot of ups and downs and just continue to putt it just like in Parkersburg," Redmon said. "I just felt like I was putting the ball in pretty good positions and I was just kind of mad after last week. I just changed it up and started playing well, starting at the Country Club."
Mace Busch was runner-up to Redmon with a total of 41. Tied at a score of 46 is Dustin Corley and Eli Reeve and Blake Synder and Cade Murray also tied at 46.
"They all played well, Zach played really well. A couple of the guys like Eli Reeves came in towards the end with a good score that counted. Which is always nice when the sixth man gets to count. We haven't played a lot in the rain, so wet conditions are not always fun," South's head coach BJ Hess said. "It was a two-stroke loss. It's tough, but we're in the right direction."
