WHEELING — Coming off a hard-to-swallow 1-0 setback in its season-opener Saturday at Hurricane, Wheeling Park got the offense going quickly Monday evening against visiting Parkersburg South.
Senior Jason Pennybacker scored two first half goals while classmate Louis Aulick and junior Coleman Meredith also tallied a pair each in the contest as Wheeling Park rebounded with a vengeance, rolling to a 10-0 drubbing over their Wood County guests at Wheeling Island Stadium.
“The kids played really well Saturday, but Hurricane is a very good team and their goalie really did a nice job against us,” Park coach Mario Julian said. “But on the other end there were a lot of positive things that we took away from that game.
“Our focus (Monday) was to regroup, put that behind us and come out strong. And that is what we did with three quick goals.”
It didn’t take Wheeling Park long to assume control, scoring a trio of goals in the initial 9:48 of the first half. The first came at the 35:02 mark with Pennybacker taking a long pass from Michael Dague and nearly losing the ball before drilling it into the far side of the net for a 1-0 reading.
Just three minutes later Aulick took a pass to the side and beat South keeper Justin Ellinger, who had come out of net, to make it 2-0.
The homestanding Patriots made it 3-0 at 30:12 when Meredith picked up a loose ball deep in the box and hammered it past Ellinger to extend the advantage.
Pennybacker’s second goal of the opening half came on a loose ball following a Wheeling Park throw-in. Pennybacker’s blast from 10-yards out pushed the margin to 4-0 at 14:51.
The Patriots were at it again early in the second half with Meredith firing a long pass to a streaking Andrew Glass, who rolled the ball past Ellinger at the 34:17 mark for a 5-0 score.
Meredith recorded his second goal of the game, on an assist from Pennybacker, at 29:50 on a sharp pass deep in the box to extend the margin to 6-0. Wheeling Park’s next two goals came off a Dague blast and a corner-header from Aulick, his second of the game.
Senior Christopher Romanek scored with 18 minutes to play while junior Sam White capped the onslaught with a penalty kick with just under two minutes showing to close the scoring.
“I think once we got up 3-0 it kind of took us out of our game-plan,” Julian said. “But we talked about it at halftime and we came back out and did a good job getting back into our system.
“There are a lot of seniors on this team and they understand that if you have the ball longer than the other team usually there are going to be more good things happen for you than them.
“I am also very happy with how our three seniors in the back played. Clay Meredith is our returning defensive all-stater and he does a real good job back there and leads the way for us.”
Senior Zach Calvert gets credited with the victory, and the shutout, in goal even though South failed to record a shot-on-goal in the contest.
