PARKERSBURG — Kendall Mader made a pair of tough first-half saves while Jessie Life and Karleigh Dowler recorded their first career hat tricks as Parkersburg South blitzed visiting Weir, 11-2, here early Saturday afternoon at Erickson All-Sports Facility.
The senior Life, a stalwart in the back of the Patriots’ defense the past three seasons, didn’t convert her first chance in the 11th minute when she had a one-on-one opportunity versus Red Rider goalie Alexis Adams as her shot went high.
“I think I got excited,” admitted Life of the early chance.
However, Dowler found Life to get PSHS (3-0) on the board in the 13th minute to begin the rout.
“I’m happy for her,” Life said of Dowler, who scored the Patriots’ eighth, ninth and 10th goals.
“I think we are doing great. We’re finding each other and finding the lanes and we were playing well and passing great.”
It was Patriot Sam Martin who found Life in the 16th minute which led to a 2-0 cushion.
Life then assisted on teammate Mackenzie Mott’s first career tally in the 33rd minute. For good measure, with exactly 60 seconds left in the first half
Life drilled one inside the left post for a 4-0 halftime advantage.
“We’re starting to find better offensive movement and we’re finishing,” said PSHS head man Ron Bucholtz, whose squad plays at 3 p.m. Monday versus Ohio power Kirtland at the River View Labor Day Showcase. “Overall, I’m very pleased with how we played.
“We had a couple of defensive letdowns there in the second half. She (Mader) got forced into two good saves in the first half. We’re real young in the back and we’re going to have some growing pains.”
Trailing 2-0 in the 18th minute, Weir had a chance to cut the deficit in half. Red Rider Ava Taylor blistered a shot in the box from the right side, but Mader managed to make a fully-extended diving stop to knock the ball away. She then hustled back to her feet in time to corral Megan Cramer’s rebound attempt.
Still down just 3-0 late in the first half, Weir’s Julianna Glodowski had a prime opportunity in the box, but her shot was kick-saved by Mader.
Samara Nunn put the Patriots ahead 5-0 in the 46th minute and then assisted on Hannah Habeb’s tally in the 53rd.
Glodowski’s unassisted goal in the 55th minute finally got the Red Riders on the board, but two minutes later it was 7-1 as Ellie Foggin found the back of the net via an Ava Barton assist.
Dowler’s first goal came in the 64th minute from a Habeb assist, but Weir (2-1-1) answered with a goal to cut it to 8-2 in the 70th minute when Erin Reisbeck scored thanks to a Jess Orris through ball.
Nunn assisted on Dowler’s goal in the 72nd minute.
Four minutes later, Patriot Erin Reisbeck launched a shot at keeper Faith Riggle, who jumped in the air and deflected the ball. After it hit the crossbar, Dowler was there to make it 10-1. In the 80th minute, Kyra Sandsy’s unassisted goal capped the scoring.
