PARKERSBURG - The Nathan Tanner era of Parkersburg South football got off to a good start after a win in week one. Now, it's time for the Patriots to see if they have staying power, as they travel to take on the University Hawks at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Week one saw the Southsiders handle Ripley in a 49-18 road win. The first win for Tanner is out of the way, and he doesn't want that to serve as a distraction heading into his team's next contest.
"Anytime you win, that's nice," Tanner said. "It wasn't a big burden or anything like that, so we go in every week with that expectation. It's nice to get it done."
Quarterback Brandon Penn helped the Patriots get the job done in his first start. The senior known for his running ability torched the Vikings through the air to the tune of four passing touchdowns. Add in one on the ground and 394 total yards of offense, and Penn could prove to be an issue against Coach John Kelley's Hawks.
"Well, it starts up front. We have to get pressure on him," Kelley said of his defensive line and how they can disrupt Penn. "He's an exceptional athlete, and he has the ability to stretch the field. He can roll out and hit the Day kid and others."
Kelley has reason to be cautious about Dylan Day. He found success against a Ripley secondary that allowed him to snag two touchdowns on seven catches and 177 yards. He has the ability to score in quick succession, since his first touchdown catch came with 3:07 to go in the first half, while Day's second score came with just :07 remaining in that half.
For UHS, it struggled to get its offense going in an 18-7 week one win over John Marshall. Quarterback Joseph McBee was held to 4 of 9 passing for 46 yards. That meant the rushing game had to step up, and it did.
Running back Logan Raber averaged 2.9 yards per carry in the win, but it was enough to lead the team in rushing with 43 yards.
McBee helped anchor the balanced running attack, since he finished with 42 yards of his own on 20 carries.
Coach Tanner says the key to stopping the duo starts up front with players like Jeffrey Tucker. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior was a force against Ripley, and Tanner wants him to lead the charge against the smaller offensive line of the Hawks.
"I think defensively, it's going to be very important for (Tucker) to play well on the defensive line," he said. "He wreaked havoc against Ripley, and I'm hoping he gets even better this week."
Tanner also said he had high expectations for his skill players, but he didn't want to look past this University team. The Patriots haven't defeated the Hawks since 2015, and he wants his team to ready for anything when the kickoff is launched at 7:30 p.m. inside Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium in Morgantown.
