BOYS SOCCER
VINCENT — Gavin Ott was hot and got a lot.
The Warren High junior striker/midfielder scored four first-half goals as the host Warriors blanked Parkersburg South, 8-0, in boys’ soccer action Thursday night.
“I just got open, trusted the shot, and let it go,” Ott said. “The team did very good today, a lot better passing and moving. Hopefully, that carries on to more games.”
Shane Gardner, Ethan Yost, Alex Modesitt, and Caleb Burns each added a goal for the Warriors, who improved their record to 4-3-1. Yost also added two assists, while Gardner had one.
Warren keepers’ Hunter Hanes and Jackson Petty combined for two saves and a clean sheet.
South freshmen goalies’ Garrett Lewis and Caleb Knopp combined for 12 saves. The Patriots (0-10) had three shots in the match to the Warriors’ 21.
Ott had the hot foot early on, scoring four lightning-quick goals during the first 20-plus minutes of action on the pitch. Shortly after his fourth one, there was a 30-minute thunder delay.
“It’s good that we have somebody else scoring goals besides Ethan (Yost) and Shane (Gardner),” said Warren head coach Ekrem Eksi. “Gavin can kick the ball. He’s good with his feet. And, I’ve always told him that he’s capable of doing that (scoring four goals).”
When play was resumed, Gardner scored with Yost assisting, and the Warriors led 5-0 at halftime.
After the break, the rout resumed with Yost, Modesitt and Burns all putting the ball into the back of the net.
With about 20 minutes remaining in the match, South senior midfielder Julio Lemus booted a long, long shot from the right wing that caromed off the left post. And, then, very late in the match, Patriot frosh Caleb Knopp drilled a hard shot directly at Petty, the Warren keeper.
“We had a few opportunities, and the kids don’t quit,” said PSHS first-year boss Jamie Whitlatch, whose youthful Patriot roster included eight freshmen and six sophomores. “They show a lot of heart. I’ve got to give them credit for that, because they like to play real hard. But we have to play a little more sound and more as a team.”
