SOUTH OUT TO CONTINUE HOT START VS. TIGERS

PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg South Patriots are off to a hot start, and a win against Princeton puts them at 4-0 for the first time in 15 years. After the Patriots dispatched of the Athens Bulldogs in a 42-20 romp, they turned their sights to a Princeton team aiming for revenge. Last year, the Tigers were on the losing end of a 37-0 game at the Erickson All-Sports Facility. This year’s 7 p.m. contest at the Erickson is one where South’s offense is as hot as ever. Quarterback Brandon Penn had a now typical night in last Friday’s win over Athens. Penn showed off his escapability en route to 209 yards and three scores on the ground. That mobility paces the Patriot attack, and it opens up the playbook for more possibilities. Head coach Nathan Tanner likes what he sees out of the signal caller, as the beat goes on for No. 1. “I don’t really know what to say about the kid. I tell coaches and other people that Brandon’s like fine wine,” Tanner said after the win over Athens. “He gets better as time goes on. He gets a little more confidence, he gets more comfortable. I can’t say enough about the kid. He had a heck of a game, for sure.” Princeton has to look out for more than just Penn, but they’ve got weapons of their own. Freshman quarterback Grant Cochran lit up Oak Hill in a 49-9 victory which saw him launch four touchdown passes. His last one of the night was also his longest, as he found a receiver for a 70-yard bomb to close out the win. That’s where South’s defense steps in. The emergence of Braxton Amos on the defensive line gives offenses a completely new weapon to worry about. The future University of Wisconsin wrestler made his varsity football debut last Friday and wreaked havoc. He tallied three sacks and a fumble recovery to compliment the efforts of those around him. The interior defense’s presence is working exactly how coach Tanner wants, as the line is meeting goals he set for them. “I tell them every week, we’ve got the same three objectives,” he said. “(We need to) out-block the other team, out-tackle the other team. We need to play with uncommon effort and be tougher than them. Whenever you’re doing that upfront, it’s really, really tough.” Back on offense, a balanced receiving corps gives Penn plenty of options. Dylan Day led the way with four catches for 44 yards, and not far behind him was Jake Hogsett with three for 41 and a score. Devin Gaines, Levi Rice, Cyrus Traugh and Landon Francisco all got in on the action with catches, and the spread-out way of moving the ball gives Penn optimism for the weeks ahead, as he said the offense “can go a lot higher” following the Athens game. Gaines had a couple scores on the ground in that win as the rushing game is on point heading into this Week 4 matchup. If everything works as planned, it could be another week of successful Patriot football.
