PARKERSBURG — Logan Henthorn found the back of the net twice while Ashton Farnsworth scored once and tallied two assists to help lead visiting Parkersburg to a 6-1 victory Tuesday evening against rival Parkersburg South inside Erickson All-Sports Facility.
The 5-5-2 Big Reds, who play host at 6 p.m. Thursday in a varsity only match against South Charleston, received seven saves from keeper Caleb Thomas. He narrowly missed a shutout.
Trailing 4-0 at intermission, the Patriots of head man Jamie Whitlatch got their lone tally in the 42nd minute when an errant Big Red pass allowed Evan Rose to take possession of the ball inside the box and score past Thomas.
“It was a pass back,” PHS head man Don Fosselman explained. “It just didn’t have enough pace on it. I would’ve liked a shutout. It’s one of those things. I’m not going to quibble about one goal.
“We passed the ball, had a lot of possession, a lot of through balls and a lot of shots on frame. I’m just real pleased with the way they played tonight. They were getting their shots and getting them on frame. We were really happy with that.”
Following a foul on PSHS, now 1-13 with a home match at 6 p.m. Thursday up next versus Athens, Farnsworth had a direct kick from 33 yards out, which beat Patriot keeper Jared Davis for a 1-0 lead with seven ticks left in the fifth minute.
With just five seconds left in the 11th minute, Tanner Stauffer assisted on Terrance Wright’s goal.
South had a deep throw-in by Brayden Cline in the 16th minute, but it was headed out of the box by Big Red Brendan Whitlatch. Two minutes later, Henthorn was on the left side of the field and beat Davis for a 3-0 lead when he booted it inside the far right post.
The Big Reds’ final tally before the break started with a Caden Rogers cross to Stauffer, who shot a laser. However, it was saved, but Tristen Brogan was on the backside unmarked and managed to knock it in for a 4-0 bulge in the 22nd minute.
PHS nearly had a 5-0 lead soon thereafter, but a Wright pass in the box was redirected by Whitlatch, who had his shot denied by keeper Garrett Lewis. Lewis joined Davis with six saves.
Julio Lemus had a one-on-one chance in the first half, but Thomas raced out toward him and while sliding he managed to take the ball off his foot. Patriot Nick Murphy also had a solid clear late in the half, as too did Big Red Evan Stavrakis.
Following Rose’s tally early in the second half, it didn’t take long for the visitors to strike again. This time it was Farnsworth playing a little two-man game in the box with teammate J.T. McCay, who found the back of the net for a 5-1 advantage in the 46th minute.
A 69th minute throw-in from Wright was headed across the box by Farnsworth, which Henthorn managed to finish to make it 6-1.
“They didn’t quit. Even if the game is not going their way they don’t quit,” said coach Whitlatch, who got a pair of tough saves by Lewis late in the second half on shots by Big Reds’ Jamie Couch and Henthorn.
“They show a lot of desire to not let down and they have a lot of heart. Both of my goalies are freshmen. It’s trial by fire. We’ve got four seniors and two juniors. It will come along. It’s just going to take work.”
Farnsworth almost tallied his second goal in the 63rd minute, but his shot drilled the top of the crossbar.
